In this century, the green tea was imported to Japan where in the sixteenth century and the tea ceremony first was appeared. At the same period the green tea becomes popular in Europe too. Green tea is rich in polyphenols (antioxidants). As it was known for centuries that green tea is good for health, only recently its healing properties were investigated scientifically. With six major polyphenols, the green tea is one of the most beneficial beverages. The Chinese had used it as a medicine for over 4000 years. Researchs show that the consuming of green tea is associated with a reduced risk of various cancers and cardiovascular diseases. The "Harvard Women Health Watch" identifies the healing power of green tea, which is mainly due to catechins (powerful antioxidants which are found in leaves). In laboratory tests, catechins acted more effectively than vitamins C and E to stop the damage which caused by oxidation in cells and have other properties that prevent from diseases. Polyphenols are beneficial antioxidants which " invade " the human body and protect from simple diseases such as sore throat and the cold until more serious such as cancer, heart diseases.
